Hand crafted leather goods

About JEB Leather

JEB leather are Australian and New Zealand-based specialists in hand made, embossed leather goods, including unique leather journals, guitar straps, belts and more. JEB are the initials of owner and operator Jo Busby – an experienced leathercraft artist who has been working with leather since the 90s.

Traditional artisan methods

At JEB Leather, Jo Busby and her son Jai practise what is quickly becoming a disappearing craft. Traditional artisan methods of embossing and dying leather are becoming rare skills that are seldom passed on to apprentices any more, and only a handful of people around the world still practise them.

Jo learned her trade from one of the world’s foremost leather master-craftsmen – a Glaswegian known in the trade as ‘Johnny B’, who has been working with leather for decades. Today, Jo continues to perfect her craft and evolve her products with feedback from her customers.

As modern, mass-production techniques become the norm, genuinely hand made, embossed leather goods are becoming far more sought after. Particularly by those who crave something different from today’s carbon-copy, mass-produced goods.

Inspired design

Jo’s travels have taken her all over the world, and she has taken inspiration for her unique leather designs from as far afield as India,
Egypt, the Celts of Scotland and the Art Nouveau movement of Paris. She is also inspired by design closer to home, including Maori and Aboriginal artwork, or simply nature itself. To learn more about the symbols and designs embossed on JEB Leather goods, see the symbols and their meanings page.

Leather for life

By working with genuine animal hides (never composite or bonded leather), we produce leather goods that are built to last for many years. We also hand-pick only the finest cow and kangaroo hides, to ensure the perfect thickness, colour and consistency of our leather.

Sustainability

The longevity of our products is something that is particularly important to us, and our customers. We hand make leather goods for those who value real, old-fashioned craftsmanship over poor quality products designed for a ‘throwaway’ consumer culture.

Working outside in the sun wherever possible, or with natural solar power, our workshop in the Maungataniwha Ranges of New Zealand is completely self sufficient. We’re also proud to be able to turn what is essentially a waste product of the food industry – cow hide – into products that are useful, practical, and designed to last for many years.

JEB Leather Guarantee

We stand by our workmanship with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. In the unlikely event that you find a manufacturing flaw in your JEB Leather product, please let us know, and we’ll replace it promptly

However, please remember that leather goods are a natural product, and every product is unique. Our leather goods take on the individual characteristics, imperfections and variances of the hide itself, which is part of the natural beauty of these products.
